And a fanlisting is a .....?
The long and the short of it: a listing of fans by fans for fans. The point of these babies is for fans of whatever it may be...an anime, a character, a hobby, a movie, etc ...to fuse together in a happy little place where others like you dig the same thing. Slick, ne? This site among so many other fanlistings can be found at The Anime Fanlisting Network.
Kenren Taishou? General? Heaven? Huh? Whodahell?
*possible spoilers? Meh, not really, it's not like you can't figure it out...*
Saiyuki Gaiden is a "prequel" of sorts to Gensomaden Saiyuki. Each of the four characters in the Gensomaden Saiyuki-Genjo Sanzo, Cho Hakkai, Sha Gojyo and Son Goku- once upon a time 500 years ago, by chance, were destined to become comrades as they are now in their present lives. Cool huh?
Sanzo was known as Konzen Douji, Hakkai was Tenpou Gensui, Goku retained his name and Gojyo was Kenren Taishou. This little fanlisting shrine, however, is all about Kenren Taishou.
Kenren was an unpredictable sort to add to his other fine lists of traits, so as you can imagine, he was *not* the most popular person in the upper echelons of the military. In fact, they quite loathed him.
Just as Hakkai and Gojyo are best buds, so were Tenpou and Kenren. Tenpou was his commanding officer however their attitudes about ranks was quite relaxed. He befriended Goku as well, and unlike the intense bickering you see with Gojyo and Goku, this relationship was one of a caring sibling variety. After all, Goku calls him "Ken niichan." (Big Brother Ken...cute) Kenren's friendship with Konzen is very much like Gojyo and Sanzo. Not the greatest in the world.....never saw that coming....
It is because of his meeting of Tenpou, Konzen and Goku that Kenren's destiny will be fashioned, very much in the same way as Gojyo with the Sanzo-tachi. Talk about the circle of karma.....

But still....why Kenren?
Why indeed? Why a fanlisting shrine for Gojyo's past incarnation? I'll tell you why.....well, I just find Kenren so damn cool. Could it be the bad-ass way he looks? Possibly. His "I don't give a crap attitude?" Oh yea. There is something about him, his look on life...so laid back, rough around the edges, this rebellious nature. Sure Gojyo shares many of these traits, but it just appeals to me that Kenren is a General (Taishou) of the Heaven's West Army. As a high ranking military officer, he should *not* be rebellious, he should *not* be carefree. He should not be crude or speak his mind....but he is and does. Intriguing, ne? He is one sexybaddassmofo!
